A study of the nature of interpretation, principles and typology of interpretive narrations in the book of Tawil al-Ayat al-Zahirah
The term Tawil (interpretation), which is derived from the verses of the Qur'an and the numerous narrations of the two sects, implies the existence of a meaning beyond the apparent words of the Qur'an. There have been constant discussions among scholars about the meaning and nature of Tawil, how it is performed and its scope in the Qur'an; and various works have emerged in this field. The book Tawil al-Ayat al-Zahirah, written by Allama Hosseini Astarabadi, one of the scholars of the tenth century AH, has been written with a different approach to the meaning of Tawil. Preliminary studies show that the author has interpreted a wide range of verses of the Qur'an with the narrations of the infallible leaders of the religion(AS) and with special presuppositions. This article, which is written in a descriptive-analytical manner, examines this book in terms of the nature of Tawil, the basics of Tawil and the typology of interpretive narrations. The results of the research indicate that the word Tawil in this book has a general meaning that includes apparent and esoteric meanings, and with this approach, many verses of the Holy Quran - which from the author's point of view are somehow related to the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) - using the narrations of these nobles have been interpreted.
